Florida Vintage Race Boat Circuit !!!

Tavares Spring Thunder Regatta

March 17-19, 2017

Regatta Registration Form

The past will come alive as the vintage and classic race boats of bygone eras return to Wooton Park in Tavares, Florida for our 10th annual Tavares Spring Thunder Regatta. Tavares is now a major stop on the Florida Vintage Race Boat Circuit with over 75 beautifully restored vintage and classic race boats running demonstration laps on a 1 mile oval course on beautiful Lake Dora. In addition to seeing and hearing these unique and beautiful boats run, spectators are invited to view them close-up in the pit area at Wooton Park on both Saturday and Sunday. We will be running large heats of all the APBA vintage classes, including outboards, classic glass, small hydros, mid-hydros, large hydros, flatbottoms, skiffs, speedsters, gold cuppers, and fire breathing grand prix hydros. The sights and sounds will be just magnificent and admission is free, so come join all the fun !!!

Legendary Boats of Chris-Craft

Back in 1894, thrill-seeking vacationers on Michigan's St. Clair River paid a nickel or so to skip across the water at 5mph in a powered rowboat. At the helm was Christopher Columbus Smith, a boatbuilder as well as an outdoors guide and market hunter.

He and his older brother Hank had joined up to build boats in Algonac, Michigan, some 10 years earlier. What they began there eventually became a company name synonymous with powerboating worldwideŚChris-Craft.

And joining the local fleet of vintage race boats during the winter months when the northern summer vintage events are in hibernation, the northern snow birds are increasingly hauling their beautifully restored vintage and classic race boats down to Florida to enjoy the sunny and warm Florida weather and to participate on our fast growing Florida Vintage Race Boat Circuit. With the flat water on the small inland Florida lakes, these regattas are attracting large boat counts with well over 75 vintage and classic race boats at the last several events, along with huge crowds. The regatta participants have fun running their beautifully restored vintage race boats at speed on a race course in the warm Florida sun, and the public gets a chance to see, hear and experience the rich history of Florida powerboat racing. Admission is free, so come join all the fun for our next event !!!
